Salcombe Slipcast mugs are cast in Stoke-on-Trent and decorated in Salcombe, Devon.
We use eartheware clay, mined from across England, to make our mugs strong and beautiful.
Pouring The Slip
Each Salcombe Slipcast mug starts as watered down clay, known as slip. The slip is poured into a plaster mould and left to set.
Breaking The Mould
When the bench caster has determined that enough time has passed, the excess slip is poured from the mould, which is broken, to reveal...
a MUG!
Fettling & Sponging
The mug is then fettled and sponged to remove any hard edges left over from the casting. After this, the mug is fired for the first time – the biscuit firing.
Glazing
After the biscuit firing, the mugs are "dipped" in glaze, before being fired again, at a higher temperature.
Litho-decorating
Lithographs are then carefully applied to the mug by our decorators in Salcombe, before their third and final firing.
Final Inspection
The final part of the process, is the final inspection. It is important to us that every Salcombe Slipcast mug is made to the highest possible standard.
